Stealing Other People's Work

Fri Jun 9, 2017, 2:21 PM
Just a reminder - I will immediately block anyone who posts other people's work in their gallery without permission.  Besides the fact that it violates dA TOC, it's a shitty thing to do.  Don't be an asshole.

Oh Hey, I Passed 2000 Deviations?

Thu Feb 20, 2014, 10:02 AM
I took a glance at my dA stats today, and realized I have over 2000 photos on here.  Jeez.  I guess I've been on here for quite some time, and it's added up over that span.  I also haven't taken my old work down - while a lot of it is inferior in quality (one would hope I've shown some improvement, anyway), it's interesting for me to see that history evolve.

For what it's worth, I'm glad to be using dA to exhibit my work.  Despite its ups and downs, I still feel dA can be a very useful place, especially for an amateur artist like myself.  What I do is a hobby, but a hobby I really enjoy.

Thanks for everyone who watches me or otherwise appreciates my deviations.  I know not everything here is for everyone, and certainly the quality is rather uneven, but it's me.

Cheers!
BRP

Not Dead Yet!

Mon May 20, 2013, 7:47 PM
I'm on a bit of pause right now as Ely and I are getting married very soon. :)  That's taking up a significant chunk of my schedule right now, but I'll be back shooting a little later on.

Sandy was a bitch.

Sun Nov 4, 2012, 7:52 PM
Just catching up with everything now, as I finally have power and internet back after the storm.  Unprecedented outages and damage across the state.  We were pretty luck, escaping anything beyond losing power - some I know were not so lucky.

And yet, climate change continues to be willfully ignored by the major parties - so I expect the trend of increasingly violent storms in this area to continue.

Restrictive Fashion

Thu Jun 7, 2012, 5:29 PM
I figured I'd try to start my first deviantART group, Restrictive-Fashion  If you follow my work, I'm sure you've noticed that I often feature clothing that restrains the wearer in some way - particularly hobble skirts (thus my former username).  I wanted to start a little community here to cover the topic - so if this is something you're interested in, I invite you to watch the group, or even contribute if you have relevant deviations.

It's been long overdue - I'm finally changing the name under which my photography is published.  The name going forward is Black Room Photo - the site is Black Room Photo.  I won't be re-watermarking all the old images, and the old S+S name will still work, but this is it going forward.

Part of the reason I hadn't replaced the old name for so long (which was rather generic) is because I couldn't come up with something I liked enough (this is also why I don't have any tattoos :) ).  I finally decided on Black Room, something that has meaning to me on several levels.

So, nothing is changed other than the name.  Thank you everyone who has enjoyed my work, I hope you continue doing so.

Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear

Tue Nov 2, 2010, 5:44 PM
This was an amazing event to attend.  Sadly I missed half of it because I woefully underestimated the number of people that would show up, and therefore failed to account for the traffic delays and the metro lines.  While I couldn't possibly hope to photograph even a small portion of the thousands of great signs, performances, installations, and other creativity that was going on around the Mall, I shared a few photos here.

There's a good top 100 signs collection here, and there's a stream on Flickr with thousands and thousands of photos from this event.

Nice to be surrounded by good, sane people, at a time when I really do think sanity is waning in this country.

San Francisco

Tue Jan 19, 2010, 6:47 PM
Looks like I'll finally be making out to SF for a couple of days without actual other commitments.  I'll be there with some friends, but I can pretty much do whatever, which was not the case the only previous two times I was there - once on a day-and-a-half sprint during a Porcupine Tree tour, and once with my parents.  It will be at the end of February.

So - any SF folks out there, give a shout if you'd like to meet for a drink or something.  I'll have my camera with me, just in case.

Happy New Year!

Sat Jan 2, 2010, 6:52 AM
I hope it's good one.

Going to at least pause my "Watching the Watchers" series because I'm a little too overwhelmed with the number of people that +fav my work.  I may just change it to include people who watch me or who comment on my work only, since that number is far far smaller than the number of people :+fav:ing it.

Watching the Watchers Feature Pt. 1

Sun Oct 18, 2009, 3:42 PM
I'm not one to post "thank you" comments to those that favorite my work or watch me (nor do I expect such comments myself), but I actually do check out everyone that does.  Many are lurkers, but sometimes I find very cool work in their galleries.  Therefore, I decided to start an irregular feature series, where I expose some of the interesting work I find during such browsing.  This is the inaugural version.  This is not in any particular order.

Obscura, Lens Trouble

Sun Oct 4, 2009, 7:58 AM
In happy news, I was fortunate to be selected as one of the photographers showing work at Obscura in a couple of weeks.

In the much more annoying news, the AF motor in my primary lens, a Canon EF-S 17-55mm, stopped working.  This happened a year ago, when I was able to get it fixed under warranty.  So now it broke again.  This is really frustrating, as this is an expensive lens, for me anyway, and I can't really afford to have a backup of similar quality.  So now, I'm a few days away from Vermont, and it would really suck to have to go there with a shitty kit lens that I haven't used in forever, so god knows if it even works.  And yeah, I *could* shoot in manual mode, but I've found I'm not nearly as good at achieving focus as the AF.  So, not sure what to do - I know I definitely can't get the lens serviced in time.

Damn it Canon, why make optically good lenses that are unreliable?  It really kills those of us who can only buy one good lens.

Idling, Traveling

Thu Sep 10, 2009, 7:39 PM
Ugh...my motherboard fried recently, so I haven't been able to edit much lately.  And the pile has grown.  It's pretty frustrating.  Hopefully I'll have the replacement soon and get going again.

BTW, in the upcoming weeks I'll be in Jacksonville, FL, and Vermont.  Just in case anyone in those areas wants to shoot or get together. :)

A Thank You

Fri May 8, 2009, 6:05 PM
I just had a somewhat unpleasant exchange with a potential model and initially it made me want to rant a bit - because you know, isn't that what the internet is for?*

But I thought about a bit more, and realized that the models I have shot with have largely been extraordinarily nice and awesome to work with.  So instead of ranting, I want to thank everyone I've shot with.  THANK YOU!

* Also, porn.
